Summary As a Senior Packaging Engineer, you will play a critical role in developing, testing and implementing innovative packaging solutions in support of Chobani’s rich pipeline of new and existing products. You will collaborate with multi-functional teams to ensure that packaging meets technical. regulatory requirements and aligns with business objectives. This position offers an opportunity to combine technical expertise with creative problem-solving to drive continuous improvement in packaging processes and materials.
Responsibilities - As subject matter expert in the Packaging Innovation & Technology team, support project management, automation maintenance and performance optimization efforts on all packaging related programs.
- Define, develop, maintain and update all packaging material specifications which is crucial to contain, protect, communicate and make convenient the consumption of Chobani products by its consumers as well as support procurement efforts.
- Define, develop and test all packaging elements such as cups, foils, plastic roll stock, bottles, closures, labeling, overwraps, corrugated cases, and pallet patterns.
- Drive and support productivity initiatives while maintaining or improving the quality of our products.
- Participate in all phases of a project from initial team meetings through ideation, support, proposal generation, installation, commissioning and start up
- As assigned by the project scope, specify packaging material which meet project expectations within the time and budget constraints.
- Provide guidance and expertise to plant operations, project managers and other functions related to packaging projects
- Support R&D, NPD, Corporate Quality and Sales & Marketing in the progression of packaging systems and solutions for Chobani’s customers and consumers
- Support packaging initiatives across all Chobani’s facilities providing mid to long term vision of packaging capabilities
- May be assigned as project manager on specific projects as needed
Requirements - Bachelor's degree in Packaging, Mechanical, Chemical or Industrial Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a Packaging Engineering capacity.
- The position requires a high degree of responsibility, leadership, decision-making ability and self-sufficiency.
- The engineer is expected to have experience in primary, secondary and tertiary packaging equipment and materials applicable to the food and beverage industry.
- Experience in fiber (paperboard & corrugated fiberboard) packaging development, qualification and troubleshooting.
- Thorough understanding of distribution qualification and test methods (ISTA, ASTM, etc.).
- Experience in thermoforming, injection molding and extrusion blow molding.
- Experience with polyolefins (PE, PP, HDPE, PS, PET), their properties and use as food containers.
- Preferred to have the ability to assess recyclability of packaging formats per guidelines defined by APR (Association of Plastic Recyclers).
- Knowledge in sachets, pouches, and related flexible packaging.
- Pro-activity, personal drive, decisiveness, commercial / business insight, interpersonal skills, excellent teamwork skills, organizational competency, and the ability to prioritize
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, Microsoft Project or Smartsheet, CAPE or TOPS, SolidWorks and AutoCAD
